Here’s my round-up of seven amazing and famous churches in Germany, plus why they’re worth the visit and some handy tips to make your experience enjoyable and respectful.

Dresden Cathedral

Originally built to satisfy a royal conversion clause, it’s now Saxony’s most important Catholic church, home to royal tombs, grand pipe organs, and more statues than your average sculpture park.

Dresden Frauenkirche

Built in the 18th century. Leveled by the Allied raids in 1945. Left in ruins for half a century. Then, in one of the most impressive comebacks in architectural history, Frauenkirche was rebuilt piece by painstaking piece—using original stones marked and reassembled like an enormous sandstone jigsaw puzzle.

Munich Frauenkirche

Built in the late 15th century, Frauenkirche is Munich’s most famous cathedral, known for its striking architecture, royal tombs, and a suspiciously placed footprint that locals claim belongs to the Devil himself.

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

Located in Breitscheidplatz, this Neo-Romanesque church, built in 1895, was heavily bombed during World War II. Instead of rebuilding it completely, the ruins were left as a stark reminder of the war’s devastation, making it one of Berlin’s most moving landmarks.

The Theatine Church of St. Cajetan is one of Munich’s most distinctive landmarks, with its ornate twin towers and intricate Rococo interior. From a practical point of view, and speaking from personal experience, the tower's height and color make this an excellent way to help navigate one's way through Munich. A sort of North Star point of reference.

The Brandenburg Gate is Berlin’s most iconic symbol. A place where history, politics, and art intersect. Standing under its towering columns, you can’t help but feel the weight of history and the resilience of Germany’s capital.

Brühl's Terrace

Known for its grand views and even grander ego. This promenade isn’t just a pretty walkway, it’s a slice of royal-era swagger perched above the Elbe. Originally part of a private estate, it was opened to the public in the 19th century and quickly became the place to see and be seen (especially if you were wearing way too much lace).

Holocaust Memorial

The memorial, consisting of 2,711 stelae, was designed by architect Peter Eisenman to evoke feelings of disorientation, isolation, and reflection—mirroring the incomprehensible scale of loss during the Holocaust.

Procession of Princes

Stretching across the outer wall of Dresden Castle, this mural depicts 35 kings, dukes, and assorted power players from the House of Wettin. And just in case you thought it was a painting… it’s not. It’s made from more than 23,000 hand-painted porcelain tiles, making it the largest porcelain artwork in the world—because why stop at oil on canvas when you can go full porcelain wall installation?

I tend to gravitate toward historic architecture, but I’ll admit that modern builds like Berlin’s glass-and-steel Cube still stop me in my tracks.

What matters most is how a place makes you feel. For me, nowhere does that quite like Dresden’s Brühl’s Terrace. Old-world beauty rebuilt from rubble, one stone at a time. It’s hard not to be impressed.
