Brandenburg Region Guide: Palaces, Parks & Countryside Escapes

Brandenburg is often overshadowed by its famous neighbor, Berlin, but travelers who look beyond the capital will find a region rich in royal history, natural beauty, and peaceful escapes. As the former heart of Prussian power, Brandenburg is home to Potsdam, a city filled with UNESCO-listed palaces, landscaped gardens, and elegant architecture. Yet the charm of this state extends well beyond its baroque showpieces. This guide offers a starting point for discovering the state’s highlights, from royal estates to countryside calm.

What to Explore

What Brandenburg Is Known For

  • Sanssouci Palace – Often called the "Prussian Versailles"
  • Potsdam’s historic parks – UNESCO-listed and walkable
  • Lakes and nature – Ideal for weekend getaways and cycling
  • Prussian royal heritage – Once the seat of the Hohenzollerns
  • Proximity to Berlin – Easy access for day trips or slow travel

Plan Your Visit

Why Brandenburg is Worth Your Time

Lakes, forests, and quiet towns define much of Brandenburg’s landscape, making it a favorite for Berliners seeking a weekend retreat. Whether you’re strolling through the terraces of Sanssouci Palace or cycling around one of the state’s 3,000 lakes, Brandenburg rewards a slower pace.

If you’re looking to experience a more traditional, earthy, and unfiltered version of German culture, Brandenburg is your place. No curated Instagram moments. Just cozy villages, unfiltered dialects, and locals who genuinely love where they live (even if they pretend not to).

Sanssouci Palace was one of those destinations I hadn't planned to visit. On the daily itinerary of our pre-planned tour, I went with minimal expectations and expected to stroll through another palace. Ornate, obviously. But I had an image in mind of what was to come.

You can imagine my surprise when it was yellow. So very yellow. The surrounding grounds soon made me understand its status on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It's ideal as a day-trip from Berlin, and an easy way to spend a day without scratching the surface.

Cheers!
